The institution was named after Baba Raghav Das, a devoted freedom fighter and Sarvodaya leader, closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Acharya Vinoba Bhave. The foundation stone was laid by the then CM of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Chandra Bhanu Gupta, and academic activities started in 1972 under the leadership of Prof. P.L. Shukla (first Principal).
