The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR), Pasighat, is one of India's most unique Ayurvedic institutions. Located in Pasighat, East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, the institute functions as an autonomous national institute under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. Unlike conventional Ayurvedic colleges, NEIAFMR has a distinctive mission—to promote classical Ayurveda while preserving and scientifically validating the rich folk medicine traditions of North-East India. This makes it an excellent choice for students who wish to pursue BAMS while contributing to research and indigenous healthcare practices.
The institute was originally established in 2008 as the North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine (NEIFM). In 2021, the Government of India expanded its mandate to include Ayurvedic education, and the institute was renamed North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR). Today, it has become one of the most promising government institutions for Ayurvedic education in the country.
NEIAFMR is recognized by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and currently offers the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) program with an approved intake of 30 students. Admission is based on NEET-UG scores through the AACCC AYUSH Counselling process for Central Government institutions.
One of the institute's greatest strengths is its focus on experiential learning. Students receive practical clinical exposure through the attached Ayurvedic hospital, where they learn diagnosis, Panchakarma therapies, preventive healthcare, and patient management under experienced faculty. In addition, they participate in field visits, medicinal plant studies, and documentation of traditional tribal healing practices, providing a learning experience that is rarely available elsewhere.
The campus offers modern classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a digital library, herbal gardens, research facilities, hostel accommodation, and an academic environment that encourages innovation and interdisciplinary learning. Regular seminars, workshops, health camps, and research activities help students develop clinical competence and scientific thinking.

North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research was established to strengthen Ayurvedic education and preserve the traditional healing systems practiced across the North-Eastern states of India. The institute combines the scientific study of Ayurveda with research into indigenous folk medicine, creating a unique academic environment for students.
The institution encourages students to develop strong clinical skills while understanding the cultural and medicinal diversity of the North-East. Through hospital training, community healthcare initiatives, medicinal plant research, and documentation of traditional knowledge, students receive a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom.
The Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) program at the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR) is designed to produce competent Ayurvedic physicians with strong clinical knowledge, research skills, and an understanding of India's traditional healing systems. The curriculum follows the latest NCISM guidelines and combines classical Ayurvedic education with modern medical sciences and community-based healthcare.

NEIAFMR has dedicated academic and clinical departments that provide quality education, patient care, and research opportunities. Every department is supported by experienced faculty, laboratories, museums, and clinical facilities to ensure students receive both theoretical knowledge and practical training.
Admission to the BAMS course at NEIAFMR is based on NEET-UG scores. Seat allotment is conducted through AACCC AYUSH Counselling for the All India Quota, while designated North-East quota seats are filled as per the institute's admission policy and Government of India guidelines.
Clinical education at NEIAFMR combines classical Ayurvedic practice with community healthcare and folk medicine research. Students receive hands-on training in the institute's 50-bed Ayurvedic hospital, which is being upgraded to 60 beds, providing exposure to a wide range of patients and treatment procedures.
Clinical Exposure Includes
The one-year compulsory rotatory internship is one of the most valuable stages of the BAMS program at NEIAFMR. Conducted as per NCISM guidelines, the internship provides practical exposure to patient care, diagnosis, treatment planning, Panchakarma therapies, and hospital administration.
Since NEIAFMR is also a national research institute, interns receive additional exposure to folk medicine documentation, medicinal plant research, and community healthcare initiatives in the North-Eastern region. This unique experience helps students understand both classical Ayurveda and indigenous healthcare systems.
Graduates from NEIAFMR are well-prepared for careers in Ayurveda, public healthcare, research, and academia. Because the institute places special emphasis on traditional knowledge systems and medicinal plant research, students also gain opportunities in specialized research organizations and conservation projects.
Choosing NEIAFMR means studying at one of India's most distinctive Ayurvedic institutions, where students receive quality education while exploring the rich traditional healing practices of North-East India.
