The name Pragjyotishpur, meaning “City of Eastern Lights,” is the ancient name of present-day Guwahati. Historically, the region served as the capital of the ancient Kamrupa Kingdom and is mentioned in several mythological texts including the Mahabharata and Kalika Purana. The city is also associated with Tantric traditions and the famous Kamakhya Temple, one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India.

Today, Guwahati continues to grow as a modern metropolitan city while preserving its historical and spiritual significance.
