Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), formerly known as Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and earlier Burla Medical College (BMC), is a premier government medical college located in Sambalpur, Odisha. Established in 1959, it is the second medical college in the state and has played a crucial role in providing medical education and healthcare services in western Odisha.

Situated about 330 km northwest of Bhubaneswar, VIMSAR operates as both a teaching hospital and a tertiary care referral center for the region.

Historical Background

  • 1958: The Odisha government, under Chief Minister Harekrushna Mahatab, decided to establish a medical college at Burla to meet the healthcare needs of western Odisha.
  • July 1959: Burla Medical College (BMC) began with 50 students (41 male, 9 female) transferred from SCB Medical College, Cuttack.
  • Initially housed in the Old College Building (OCB), it faced infrastructure challenges and was denied recognition by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • 1961–1966: Construction of the new campus with main college, hospital, hostels, and staff quarters.
  • 1967: Received MCI approval.
  • 1969: Renamed Veer Surendra Sai Medical College in honor of the legendary freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai.
  • Now known as VIMSAR.
