Overview of Armed Forces Medical College

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is one of India’s premier medical institutions located in Pune, Maharashtra. Managed by the Indian Armed Forces, AFMC has played a pivotal role in medical education and healthcare services for over seven decades. Established in May 1948, it was founded as a postgraduate teaching institute based on the recommendations of the BC Roy Committee. The college was created by amalgamating various Indian Army Medical Corps units to strengthen the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).

AFMC’s undergraduate wing started on 4 August 1962, now celebrated as AFMC Day, marking a milestone in the college’s journey of producing highly skilled medical professionals. Recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), the college conducts undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-speciality programs, as well as nursing and paramedical training.

The roots of AFMC date back to 1944, when Lt. Colonel Darshan Singh Vohra set up a facility for providing artificial limbs and rehabilitation to soldiers injured during combat. Post-independence, in 1948, the institution expanded to meet the growing medical needs of the Armed Forces.

In 1962, the Graduate Wing was established to increase the intake of MBBS students into the Armed Forces. Initially affiliated to the University of Pune, AFMC is now affiliated with MUHS, Nashik. The first batch of MBBS students graduated in October 1966, under the leadership of Maj Gen Noshir Karani, AFMC’s founding Commandant.
