Medical College, Kolkata, also known as Calcutta Medical College (CMC), is the oldest medical college in Asia teaching Western medicine, established on 28 January 1835 by Lord William Bentinck. Recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), it is among the most prestigious government medical colleges in India.

With nearly 190 years of excellence, the college is famous for its MBBS program, postgraduate (MD/MS), diploma, and super-specialty (DM/MCh) courses. It is attached to a multi-specialty hospital with more than 2,000 beds, serving as a tertiary care center for Eastern India.

History of Medical College, Kolkata

  • 1764 – British East India Company established the Indian Medical Service (IMS).
  • 1822 – Native Medical Institution was founded to train local doctors.
  • 1835 – Medical College, Bengal (later Medical College, Kolkata) was established.
  • 1836 – First human dissection in India performed by Madhusudan Gupta (now celebrated as Medical Education Day).
  • 1883 – Kadambini Ganguly became the first woman student, a landmark in women’s medical education.
