Deben Mahata Government Medical College was set up by the Government of West Bengal in 2018 (formally operational since 2020) to address the acute shortage of doctors in the Purulia region.
Originally referred to as Purulia Government Medical College, the institution was renamed in memory of Deben Mahata, a local leader.
