The proposal for Sri Jagannath Medical College was approved by the Government of Odisha to expand healthcare and medical education access in coastal Odisha. Built at a cost of around ₹300 crores, the institution faced initial delays and missed the 2019 deadline. However, the first MBBS batch was admitted in 2021, marking the beginning of its journey as a full-fledged government medical college.
Currently, the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), Puri functions as the teaching hospital, while a new 700-bed teaching hospital adjacent to the college campus is under development, expected to be operational by 2024.
