The foundation stone of the medical college was laid on 1 July 2007 by then Chief Minister Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhar Reddy. The institute was established under the RIMS Act 31 of 2007 as a semi-autonomous institution, and it began functioning in 2011 with 100 MBBS seats.
In 2018, GMC Ongole introduced postgraduate courses in Physiology, Pharmacology, and Microbiology. By 2021, more PG programs were added, including Psychiatry, Forensic Medicine, and Respiratory Medicine.
On 28 December 2018, the institution was officially renamed as Government Medical College Ongole. Today, the college has expanded to 120 MBBS seats and 99 PG seats, offering medical education across 19 departments.
The vision of GMC Ongole is to be a center of excellence in medical education and research, while its mission is to train competent doctors and serve the healthcare needs of Prakasam district and surrounding regions.
