The foundation of Rangaraya Medical College dates back to 2 April 1958, when a meeting led by Sri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy (then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh) paved the way for its establishment. The Maharajah of Pithapuram offered land and buildings for the college, and on 17 November 1958, RMC was formally recognized.

Initially run under the Kakinada Medical Education Society, the college started with MBBS admissions in 1958. Since then, it has evolved into a full-fledged medical institution with undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty programs.
