R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH), Kolkata, established in 1886, is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical colleges in India. Originally founded as the Calcutta School of Medicine, it was Asia’s first private medical college, later taken over by the Government of West Bengal in 1958. The college was renamed in 1948 in honour of Dr. Radha Gobinda Kar, a visionary philanthropist and educationist who played a pioneering role in self-sufficient medical education during colonial India.
