Established on the historical Allipur Jail campus, which housed prominent Indian freedom fighters, the medical college was inaugurated in 1961. The college became autonomous in 1996 as Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences and has since grown into a hub for medical education, research, and healthcare services.
