The list of medical colleges in Nepal includes government institutions, private medical colleges, university campuses and specialised health science academies offering MBBS programmes. For Indian students, the choice of an MBBS college involves more than its total seat intake. Academic affiliation, teaching hospital facilities, foreign-candidate admission rules, campus location and the complete tuition fee structure are equally important.
This guide covers the 28 institutions in the working 2026–27 MBBS allocation list, their allocated seats, institutional categories, academic authorities and locations. It also explains the available fee information, admission procedures, Nepal MBBS counselling and the National Medical Commission (NMC) requirements Indian students must consider before enrolling.
| Particulars | Details |
| Academic session | 2026–27 |
| Institutions in the working allocation list | 28 |
| Combined MBBS seat allocation | 2,745 |
| Public institutions | 11, according to the working classification |
| Private institutions | 17, according to the working classification |
| Major academic authorities | Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University |
| Other authorities | BPKIHS, KAHS, PAHS, PoAHS and other academies or university schools |
| Main applicants covered | Nepalese and eligible foreign candidates, including Indian students |
Note: The figures above should be cross-checked against the complete MEC seat-allocation document dated 16 October 2026 before publication. The seat allocation represents institutional intake, not the number of seats available to Indian students.
The working 2026–27 MBBS allocation list contains 28 medical institutions with a combined allocation of 2,745 seats. These institutions operate under Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), and other universities and health science academies.
According to the working allocation classification, 11 institutions are public and 17 are private. Eight institutions are associated with Tribhuvan University, while 11 are associated with Kathmandu University. The remaining nine operate under other academic authorities.
The total MBBS seat allocation should not be confused with the number of seats available to Indian students. Nepalese candidates, foreign applicants and scholarship candidates may fall under different admission categories. The applicable seat distribution, eligibility requirements and selection procedures depend on the admission category and academic session.
Birat Medical College provides one example of this distinction. Its published 2026 admission information lists 130 MBBS seats, including 43 foreign seats, 71 paying seats for Nepalese candidates and 16 scholarship seats. These figures relate to Birat Medical College and should not be applied to other institutions.
Indian applicants should check the foreign-candidate seat allocation and the applicable MEC admission notice before selecting a college.
The following table brings together the 28 institutions in the working 2026–27 allocation list. It includes their academic authorities, reported locations, institutional categories, and allocated MBBS intake.

Institutional category follows the working allocation classification. Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences is identified separately as a university school. The final ownership classification should be checked against the relevant institutional records and complete MEC notice.
Important: These figures represent allocated MBBS intake. They do not establish the number of vacant seats, final admissions or seats available to foreign candidates. Indian applicants must consult the foreign-candidate seat distribution for the relevant admission session.
The public medical institutions in Nepal include health science academies, university campuses and specialised medical institutions. Their administrative structures are different, even though they fall under the public category in the working allocation list.
The following 11 institutions are classified as public in that list:
| No. | Government or public medical institution | Academic authority | MBBS seats |
| 1 | B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences | BPKIHS | 130 |
| 2 | Karnali Academy of Health Sciences | KAHS | 50 |
| 3 | Madan Bhandari Academy of Health Sciences | MBAHS | 50 |
| 4 | Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences | MIHS | 50 |
| 5 | Maharajgunj Medical Campus | Tribhuvan University | 100 |

| 7 | Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences | Tribhuvan University | 130 |
| 8 | Patan Academy of Health Sciences | PAHS | 65 |
| 9 | Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences | PoAHS | 50 |
| 10 | Purbanchal University School of Health Sciences | PUSHS | 50 |
| 11 | Rapti Academy of Health Sciences | RAHS | 50 |
These institutions should not be treated as one administrative group. Maharajgunj Medical Campus operates under Tribhuvan University's Institute of Medicine, while BPKIHS and Patan Academy of Health Sciences have separate institutional structures.
The working 2026–27 allocation classification identifies 11 public institutions among the 28 listed institutions. This includes university campuses, health science academies and other specialised institutions.
For Indian applicants, public ownership does not automatically mean lower foreign-student tuition or guaranteed admission. The applicable admission category, foreign-seat availability and fee schedule must be checked separately.
The working allocation classification identifies 17 institutions under the private category. Most are independently operated medical colleges affiliated with Tribhuvan University or Kathmandu University.
| No. | Private medical college or institution | University affiliation | Location | MBBS seats |
| 1 | B & C Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Centre | KU | Birtamode, Jhapa | 60 |
| 2 | Birat Medical College | KU | Biratnagar, Morang | 130 |
| 3 | Chitwan Medical College | TU | Bharatpur, Chitwan | 130 |
| 4 | College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital | KU | Bharatpur, Chitwan | 130 |
| 5 | Devdaha Medical College and Research Institute | KU | Devdaha, Rupandehi | 90 |
| 6 | Gandaki Medical College | TU | Pokhara, Kaski | 120 |
| 7 | Janaki Medical College | TU | Janakpur, Dhanusha | 60 |
| 8 | Kathmandu Medical College | KU | Kathmandu | 130 |
| 9 | KIST Medical College | TU | Lalitpur | 120 |

| 12 | Manipal College of Medical Sciences | KU | Pokhara, Kaski | 120 |
| 13 | National Medical College | TU | Birgunj, Parsa | 120 |
| 14 | Nepal Medical College | KU | Jorpati, Kathmandu | 130 |
| 15 | Nepalgunj Medical College | KU | Kohalpur, Banke | 130 |
| 16 | Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital | KU | Biratnagar, Morang | 130 |
| 17 | Universal College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital | TU | Bhairahawa, Rupandehi | 120 |
Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences is a university school, not an independently operated private medical college. Its inclusion in the working private allocation group should not be interpreted as proof of private ownership.
Private medical colleges differ in their location, teaching hospital arrangements, tuition schedules, and foreign-student admission conditions. A college with 130 allocated seats does not necessarily have more foreign seats or better clinical training than one with a smaller intake.
There is no single official ranking that establishes the best medical college in Nepal for every applicant. The following institutions are a research shortlist, not a ranking of academic quality or clinical performance.
| College | Location | What to investigate |
| Kathmandu Medical College | Kathmandu | Foreign-student fees, clinical training and teaching hospital |
| Manipal College of Medical Sciences | Pokhara | Current admission terms, fees and clinical facilities |
| Nepal Medical College | Jorpati, Kathmandu | Programme structure, hospital facilities and total course cost |
| Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital | Biratnagar | Foreign-candidate eligibility, clinical departments and fees |
| Birat Medical College | Morang | Foreign-seat allocation and admission information |
| Chitwan Medical College | Bharatpur | Tuition, hospital arrangements and academic affiliation |
| College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital | Bharatpur | Admission route, fee schedule and clinical training |
| Universal College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital | Bhairahawa | Total course cost and admission conditions |
| Gandaki Medical College | Pokhara | Tuition, living expenses and clinical training |
| Nepalgunj Medical College | Kohalpur | Fee details, academic arrangements and eligibility |
Before selecting an institution, compare the actual programme rather than relying on its seat intake or promotional ranking. The following factors are particularly relevant:
The cost of studying MBBS in Nepal depends on the institution, admission category, applicable fee rules, and academic session. Indian students should obtain the foreign-student fee schedule rather than relying on a fee quoted for Nepalese candidates.
Indian students should use a fee schedule issued by the college for foreign applicants. A fee quoted for Nepalese students or an older admission batch should not be treated as the current fee for Indian candidates.
The following figures provide reference points from published institutional information. They should not all be interpreted as confirmed 2026–27 admission quotations.
| Medical college | Published fee information | Important limitation |
| Kathmandu Medical College | INR 55 lakh programme fee for Indian and international students. | Published 2025–26 information; not a confirmed 2026–27 quotation. |
| Patan Academy of Health Sciences | US $70,000for SAARC students and US $84,000 for non- SAARC students. | Historical foreign-student fee information; current applicability must be confirmed. |
| Birat Medical College | Published 2026 admission information lists 130 MBBS seats, including 43 foreign seats. | Seat allocation information, not a tuition quotation. |
The Kathmandu Medical College figure relates specifically to 2025-26. The Patan Academy figures are historical and should not be presented as current fees without a new official schedule.
Tuition is only one part of the total cost of studying MBBS. Students should calculate the expenses for the complete programme.
| Fee component | Details to obtain |
| Tuition | Total course fee and instalment schedule |
| Admission | One-time admission charges |
| University registration | Registration and affiliation charges |
| Examination | Annual examination and repeat-examination fees |
| Hostel | Annual charges, deposit and accommodation rules |
| Food | Monthly or annual meal expenses |
| Insurance | Mandatory student insurance, if applicable |
| Other charges | Additional compulsory institutional fees |
| Refund | Cancellation rules and deductions after payment |
The public or private category alone does not establish the total fee payable by an Indian student. The actual amount depends on the applicable foreign-student fee schedule and compulsory charges.
Before paying an admission deposit, request an official written fee schedule for the intended academic session.
Check whether the quotation:
If the fee is quoted in Nepalese rupees or US dollars, calculate the approximate amount in Indian rupees using the prevailing exchange rate. Allow for exchange-rate changes during the programme.
Do not rely on an agent's verbal quotation or an old fee chart as proof of the current amount payable.
Medical colleges in Nepal operate under different universities, university schools, and health science academies. Academic affiliation identifies the authority responsible for the programme; it does not necessarily describe who owns or operates the institution.
Tribhuvan University is one of Nepal's main academic authorities for medical education. The 2026–27 allocation summary lists eight institutions under TU.
| No. | TU-affiliated institution | Location | MBBS seats |
| 1 | Chitwan Medical College | Bharatpur, Chitwan | 130 |
| 2 | Gandaki Medical College | Pokhara, Kaski | 120 |
| 3 | Janaki Medical College | Janakpur, Dhanusha | 60 |
| 4 | KIST Medical College | Lalitpur | 120 |
| 5 | Maharajgunj Medical Campus | Kathmandu | 100 |
| 6 | National Medical College | Birgunj, Parsa | 120 |
| 7 | Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences | Kathmandu | 130 |
| 8 | Universal College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital | Bhairahawa, Rupandehi | 120 |
Maharajgunj Medical Campus is part of Tribhuvan University's Institute of Medicine. It should be distinguished from independently operated colleges affiliated with TU.
Kathmandu University is another major academic authority for MBBS programmes in Nepal. The working allocation list identifies 11 institutions under KU:
| No. | KU-affiliated institution | Location | MBBS seats |
| 1 | B & C Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Centre | Birtamode, Jhapa | 60 |
| 2 | Birat Medical College | Biratnagar, Morang | 130 |
| 3 | College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital | Bharatpur, Chitwan | 130 |
| 4 | Devdaha Medical College and Research Institute | Devdaha, Rupandehi | 90 |
| 5 | Kathmandu Medical College | Kathmandu | 130 |
| 6 | Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences | Dhulikhel, Kavrepalanchok | 130 |
| 7 | Lumbini Medical College and Teaching Hospital | Palpa | 120 |
| 8 | Manipal College of Medical Sciences | Pokhara, Kaski | 120 |
| 9 | Nepal Medical College | Jorpati, Kathmandu | 130 |
| 10 | Nepalgunj Medical College | Kohalpur, Banke | 130 |
| 11 | Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital | Biratnagar, Morang | 130 |
Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences is a university school. It should not be described as an independently operated private college simply because it appears in the KU-affiliated group.
Several medical institutions operate under separate health science academies or university structures.
| Institution | Academic authority |
| B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences | BPKIHS |
| Karnali Academy of Health Sciences | KAHS |
| Madan Bhandari Academy of Health Sciences | MBAHS |
| Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences | MIHS |
| Martyr Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences | MDCUHS |
| Patan Academy of Health Sciences | PAHS |
| Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences | PoAHS |
| Purbanchal University School of Health Sciences | PUSHS |
| Rapti Academy of Health Sciences | RAHS |
These authorities should not all be described as universities. Some are specialised health science academies, while others are university schools, campuses or independent institutional structures.
Indian applicants should confirm the current academic authority, programme arrangements and degree-awarding institution before accepting admission.
Medical institutions are distributed across several cities and regions of Nepal. Their locations are useful when estimating accommodation costs, daily transport, and access to the teaching hospital.
| City or region | Medical colleges and institutions |
| Kathmandu | Kathmandu Medical College, Maharajgunj Medical Campus, Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences |
| Kathmandu Valley and Lalitpur | Nepal Medical College, KIST Medical College, Patan Academy of Health Sciences |
| Dhulikhel | Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences |
| Pokhara | Gandaki Medical College, Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences |
| Bharatpur, Chitwan | Chitwan Medical College, College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital |
| Biratnagar and eastern Nepal | Birat Medical College, Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital, Purbanchal University School of Health Sciences |
| Janakpur | Janaki Medical College, Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences |
| Rupandehi and nearby areas | Devdaha Medical College and Research Institute, Universal College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital |
| Jhapa | B & C Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Centre |
| Dharan | B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences |
| Palpa | Lumbini Medical College and Teaching Hospital |
| Kohalpur and western Nepal | Nepalgunj Medical College |
| Birgunj | National Medical College |
| Jumla | Karnali Academy of Health Sciences |
| Hetauda | Madan Bhandari Academy of Health Sciences |
| Ghorahi | Rapti Academy of Health Sciences |
| Geta, Kailali | Martyr Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences |
Before accepting a seat, confirm the actual campus address, hostel location and hospital used for clinical training. The administrative address and the location where students attend clinical postings may differ.
Indian students considering an MBBS degree in Nepal should understand the National Medical Commission's requirements for foreign medical graduates. A college's location in Nepal or its inclusion in the MEC seat allocation list does not automatically establish that its MBBS qualification will meet India's medical registration requirements.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) was replaced by the National Medical Commission (NMC). An old claim of MCI approval is not sufficient evidence that a foreign medical qualification meets India's current registration requirements.
Under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021, the requirements for students covered by these regulations include:
| Requirement | What Indian students should check |
| Course duration | Minimum 54 months of medical education |
| Medium of instruction | English |
| Internship abroad | Minimum 12 months at the same foreign medical institution |
| Medical curriculum | Theory, practical and clinical training equivalent to the prescribed Indian MBBS standard |
| Foreign qualification | The qualification and institution must meet the applicable regulatory conditions |
| Licensing requirements | Compliance with the applicable licensing and registration rules |
| Indian internship | Any additional supervised internship requirement applicable to the candidate's admission batch |
The 12-month internship at the foreign medical institution is a separate requirement from any supervised internship requirement applicable in India. Students should not assume that completing an internship abroad automatically satisfies every Indian registration condition.
An agent's statement that a college is NMC approved is not sufficient. Indian students should assess the actual course structure, clinical training, internship arrangements and applicable registration requirements before paying an admission deposit.
Indian students must follow the admission procedure applicable to their candidate category and academic session. Entrance examination requirements, selection routes, and deadlines may differ between candidate groups.
The entrance examination and selection route should be checked individually. Do not assume that every foreign applicant follows an identical admission process.
Review the academic, age and entrance examination criteria for the relevant admission route. Confirm the NEET requirements applicable to Indian students seeking a foreign medical qualification.
Visit the Medical Education Commission's official website and read the notice for the intended admission session.
Check the following details:
Use the college list to identify institutions that match your academic preferences and budget.
Compare their academic authorities, teaching hospitals, foreign-seat allocation, current fees and admission conditions.
Follow the document checklist provided in the official admission notice. Depending on the category, applicants may need:
Obtain the foreign-student fee schedule from the shortlisted institution. Include tuition, admission, registration, examination, hostel, food and other compulsory expenses.
Submit the application through the prescribed route. Follow the applicable examination, merit, matching or selection instructions.
Before accepting a seat, check the institution's name, academic authority, admission category, programme details and fee schedule.
Follow the official instructions for document verification, payment and enrolment. Keep copies of the admission letter, fee quotation, payment receipts and relevant academic documents.
Meeting the minimum eligibility conditions does not guarantee admission. Selection depends on the applicable admission route, available seats and the instructions issued by MEC.
The Medical Education Commission publishes admission and seat-allocation notices for different candidate categories. Nepalese candidates and foreign applicants should not automatically be assumed to follow an identical counselling process.
MEC has issued separate notices for foreign-candidate categories. For example, its notice dated 21 September 2026 concerns foreign candidates under Subcategory II who are not required to appear in MECEE-BL 2027.
Before proceeding, check:
Always follow the latest MEC notice for your candidate category. Do not use an expired application schedule or assume that an admission procedure from a previous academic session remains valid.
The right MBBS college depends on your eligibility, budget, preferred location, and the academic and clinical training offered by the institution. A college's total seat allocation or promotional ranking should not be the deciding factor.
Identify the university or health science academy responsible for the MBBS programme. Confirm the qualification awarded and the institution's current academic arrangements.
Check the hospital used for clinical training. Ask about its medical departments, clinical rotations, practical facilities and the arrangements for supervised internship.
Compare the total tuition fee and compulsory charges. Include admission, registration, examinations, hostel, food, insurance, and travel expenses.
Estimate the cost of accommodation and daily expenses in the city where the institution is located. Also consider transport between the campus, hostel and teaching hospital.
Check whether the institution accepts Indian students through the applicable admission route. Confirm the foreign-seat allocation and the selection requirements for the intended academic session.
Read the latest NMC regulations and applicable FAQs before accepting an offer. Check the course duration, medium of instruction, clinical training and internship arrangements against the requirements for your admission batch.
A written confirmation of the programme details is more useful than an agent's verbal assurance about admission or future registration in India.
Students who want an offline copy of the college list can use the browser's print option and select Save as PDF.
The saved document can include the institution names, academic authorities, institutional categories, locations, and MBBS seat allocations.
Include the academic session and preparation date in the saved copy. The MEC may issue revised seat-allocation notices, so an older PDF should not be used as confirmation of current intake or foreign-seat availability.
