Modeled on the lines of AIIMS New Delhi, IGIMS was created under a State Legislature Act to provide advanced healthcare, medical education, and research facilities to Bihar and Eastern India.

The institute began offering the MBBS program in 2011 after receiving recognition from the Medical Council of India (now NMC). Today, IGIMS is not only known for its 150 MBBS seats but also holds the highest number of super-specialty seats in Bihar, offering MD, MS, M.Ch, DM, DNB, PhD, and paramedical programs.
